May - Crowley Lake Sunrise

Most folks have seen Crowly Lake from Hwy 395, the marina, or watching fireworks on the 4th of July.  This image is taken from the dam that creates the lake on the south end.

This morning the clouds were awesome.  I went out for an early morning photo shoot.

One of the first Eastern Sierra pictures I printed in a large format was from this dam.  I had not been there in a while and the clouds seemed to be lining up nicely, so I decided to revisit the dam.

I was not disappointed.  The clouds on the horizon were cutting the morning sunlight into layers.  Illuminating the clouds and the bottom of the mountains.  The mountains themselves were in the shadows.  The wind was still enough that the water was calm enough to create a reflection.  It all added up to a beautiful scene.  The light, shoreline, and reflection gave the image depth and character.

This scene was not easy to photograph.  The road has a seven foot chain link fence on the lake side.  I was lucky the first time I was there.  Someone had created a hole in the chain link I could fit my lens through.  This time there was no hole in the fence.  I took some through the fence.  This one in the calendar was taken with me holding the camera over the top of the fence, trying to keep it still.

Overall, I am pleased with the way it turned out and looks great printed large on metal.
