June - Wild Irises

In one of my photo of the month post I had said getting a picture of Bishop’s wild Irises has been on my bucket list for years. Although I have tried up until know I could not get an image I liked.

It always seemed like I was cursed.  Either I was not in the area when they were blooming, it was too windy to take pictures of them, or I just got the composition wrong.  I just could not get an image I liked.

I visited the site the day before I took this image.  The Irises were blooming nicely but the light was not right, so I decided to come back the next morning.  The next day in Mammoth, I woke up to a light rain.  I decided to go anyway.  By the time I reached Hwy 395 the sky was clear.  The clouds were just hanging around the mountains.

In Bishop it was overcast providing a soft diffused light and nice clouds framing the mountain tops.  There was another photographer there when I got to the location.  He was just leaving telling me it was too windy to shoot them.

I was not deterred.  Shooting a lot in the Eastern Sierra I have a lot of experience shooting things in the wind.  Between camera settings and photo editing software there is usually a way to make it work.

As I said in my post, this is a bucket item I can check off.  I was happy with the images I got that day.  I will be back. It is a beautiful spot and my Golden’s love to walk there.  It has so many cool smells for them to sniff.
