July - June Lake

For scenery in the Eastern Sierra the June Lake Loop cannot be beat.  Four beautiful lakes and a great stream in a short distance.  All framed with amazing mountain views.  Personally, I cannot decide which lake is prettier, June or Silver.  If pressed I would say Silver Lake.  There are picnic tables at the Silver Lake Resort that overlook the lake and the mountains.  Not to mention the restaurant at the Resort is one of the best breakfast places in the Eastern Sierra.

It is difficult to get a well composed” grand” panorama view of June.  Along 158 and at the scenic overlook the pine trees obscure the view of the lake.  June Lake beach has a beautiful view, especially if there is no wind and the water reflects the mountains.  However, the low angle from the beach does not give a “grand” view of the lake like you can get from above.

There is this one spot along Hwy158 where the trees are smaller.  It provides a rare, mostly unobstructive, view of the lake from above.  You must park along the side of the road farther up and then walk to the spot. Not for the faint of heart because of the narrow shoulder puts you close to the traffic.

I have taken a winter image from that spot where the lake is frozen.  It was mid-morning and there was no wind, so I decided to see if the lake water was calm enough for reflections.  Sure enough it was, and June Lake reflected the mountains beautifully.  As a bonus, there were even clouds to add some character to the sky.

I printed this on metal, and it looks great.  Even though the fishing boats break up the reflections they provide the true picture of June!

Yes, after I had the calendar printed, I realized I should have used June and the month for June Lake. Oh well…
