February - Horses and Snow
In our travels of the Owens Valley, we always look for the Tule Elk in Tinemaha. Tinemaha which is just south of Big Pine. The Elk are so photogenic that they regular entries in my Eastern Sierra calendars.
2026 must be the year of the horse. I have two images with horses in this year’s calendar.
I was exploring around Big Pine heading up to Glacier Point when I saw this scene. It had all the ingredients to make it an interesting image:
· There were layers. There were these interesting layers created by snow in the mountains, brown hills, and then dry fields.
· There were horses. People universally love pictures with horses in them. Horses are such majestic animals. Their history is so intertwined with ours that love for these animals must be part of our DNA.
· Shows the Changing of the Season. The snow in the mountains juxtaposed to the brown mountains and fields show gradual transition of winter surrendering her grasp to spring and summer.
It was a wonderful drive up to Glacier Lodge. Starting from the golden colored Owens Valley to the snow-covered Glacier Lodge (see December’s image.) It is worth the effort to go!
