April - Sam's Cabin Hwy 395

IYKYK! It was a stormy day; the clouds were providing the perfect backdrop for this beloved old cabin.

This beloved cabin is the most photographed building(s), there used to be two, in the Eastern Sierra. Sam’s Cabin is located on Hwy 395 between the June Lake and Lee Vining.

The Frank Sam Cabin is one of the last remaining structures from Tom's Farrington Ranch. Frank Sam was a descendent of Captain Sam who was one of the Yosemite-Mono Paiute leaders during the Mariposa Indian War. Captain Sam's daughters, Leanne and Louisa, were sister-wives of Bridgeport Tom. The sisters were known for their exquisite basket weaving. This house was built in the late 1920's and was occupied until the early 1960's.

The cabin is still owned by the Sam family today.

Frank Sam was also associated with the U.S. Pumice Company, which leased a mine from him in the early 1940s at the Mono Craters. If you've ever bought a pumice scouring product, pumice BBQ briquettes or Freatherrock landscaping rocks then most likely they came from the Frank Sam Mine located at the Mono Craters' Southern Coulee. In the early 1940's the U.S. Pumice Company leased the mine from Frank Sam and they continue to operate it today.

FYI, IYKYK means “If you know, you know.”
